The Lux Terra Leadership Foundation has completed its scheduled workshops for the entire student population of the four schools it has been working with on the project tagged, “Intensifying the Campaign for Greater Integrity in Nigeria.” The workshops which took place in the months of October and November, 2023 meant that the team of facilitators from the foundation spent a full week at each school in order to engage the students intensively on the drive to make them into more effective students who live honestly always.
The four schools involved in these workshops are St Peter’s College, Garaku, Nasarawa State; International Islamic Academy, Madalla, Niger State; Our Lady of Apostles Girls’ College, Akwanga, Nasarawa State; and St John Bosco Comprehensive Secondary School, Okene, Kogi State. Being faith-based schools, the workshops were facilitated with faith-based and behaviour change approaches.
The workshops which also included meetings with the members of staff of the schools served as an opportunity to build on the engagements from the previous years, this being the third in a series of such workshops in each school. The students were engaged in a wide range of topics which included leadership, personal effectiveness, effective and wholesome communication, tips for mental health, confidence building, alternatives to dishonesty among others. There were also talk-back sessions in which students were able to express themselves freely regarding our engagements with them and ask questions about issues that were bothering them. The aim of the engagements was to build on the successes recorded over the years in attitudinal change and to further reinforce the messages of honest-living. It is our belief that with engagements like these, students are able to make necessary attitudinal changes and build the right character needed to make the society a better place and make their schools into centres of excellence in character and learning.
The students were highly receptive of the efforts of the foundation and reported quite impressive displays of honesty and responsibility among one another. They demonstrated in different ways that the engagements we have had with them over the years have been fruitful and have contributed in making them better children, not only within their schools, but even outside.
The workshops with students is one of the components of the Lux Terra Leadership Foundation’s project to build a culture of integrity in Nigeria, a project which is carried out with the support of the MacArthur Foundation.
